King says he does not support Bersih rally
According to Malaysiakini via Bernama, the King had just issued a rare statement directly to media regretting the claim that he and the palace had supported Saturday’s illegal gathering.
Among other things the King has asked Malaysians to act in accordance with the law and not be involved in any illegal action or activity.
“Every Malaysian citizen is responsible for maintaining public order for continued peace and stability in the country,” Tuanku Mizan said.
I can see the headlines in the mainstream media tomorrow.
It’s yet another door closed in the face of Malaysians interested in building a full democracy in this country.
Personally, I take this as an achievement of the Bersih rally. There have been memorandums handed before to the Palace, notably during the Reformasi days. To get a response, even if it is negative, speaks volumes of the loudness of voice that the rally let loose.
Should we all still wear yellow on Saturday?
Update 1
There may still be hope. Sagaladoola has spotted a different take on the press statement by Malaysia-Today.
Update 2
For balance, here’s a glimpse into the work of the Comptroller of the Royal Household (Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja),

Are you sure what the King said in Bernama was CORRECTLY reported? Or has there been a twist to pour cold water on the Bersih effort since Bernama is the govt’s news agency? Would like to hear other comments now that I have started the ball rolling
We have to depend on ourselves. No international pressure, no royal support will bring us to where we want to go. We have to do it ourself. No short cut. No quick-fix. People have to be educated. We have to create awareness in the heartland, in the kampung.
We have to bring the news not seen in the local media to our kampung folks. Let them be better informed and let them decide.
Question and challenge SPR for suspected cases of gerrymandering. As how Haris Ibrahim is doing it.
We have to do the dirty jobs ourself, FOLK. Talk to the people in kampung, those do not have access to the internet. It is a slow process but a sure process.
GOD will help those who help themselves.
The government and the mainstream media will go overtime to discredit the BERSIH Rally just based on the statement by the King through Bernama. This is for sure. Definitely. I can already imagine statements by Pak Lah, Najib, Nazri, Zam, Khairy and news reports by the mainstream media to ‘kill once and for all’ the BERSIH. Many fence sitters who once support the BERSIH Rally might also think otherwise. And again, no real change will happen and Malaysia will be doomed with the UMNO and BN for another 50 years…
I’m broken hearted… nearing to tears… might as well pack up and migrate… but I have no money… what to do
No more Electoral Reform?
OK, people.. time to get on with our lives….
Anyway, it is better to attempt than not attempting at all.
Oh yeah, the rally may be in page 4 or 5, but this statement will be on the headlines I think….. as usual .. . Hahaha….

Hey guys, did we expect anything other than this response. The Bersih rally was not to achieve any positive repartee from the Agong. The main aim was to demonstrate that there are rakyat who are unhappy with the unlevel electoral election field and want changes. And who best to effect such changes but ourselves.
Of course in line with Bersih we should continue with yellow saturdays.
Rakyat power.
My heart dropped when I read your blog. I was all geared up to wear yellow every Saturday. Do I then not do it now? But then logic is telling me that I should stick to what I believe in and not give up so easily. Sedikit-sedikit, lama-lama jadi bukit. We cannot think that we are the only ones fighting for justice, there are many out there who are also dying to fight for justice but does not know how. Let’s spread the word around and arise to the challenge.
Given their ‘credibility’, the main stream media will always blow anything out of proportion to save their rice bowl. Truthfulness has never been their virtue.
Let’s not be disheartene as yet. Wait for the full transcript of the palace statement.
Last night, while passing the palace, I noticed a fair number of cars and police outriders ath the gates. Must have been a pow-wow.
HRH Agong will be under tremendous pressure to disavow any support. God knows the measures brought to bear on his royal young shoulders.
Daulat Tuanku X 3
My first reading the report from Bernama via Malaysiakini, I was initially disappointed. But reading it a second time, it does not mean that the King will not consider the petition. It said His Majesty did not support the illegal gathering – thats all. And His Majesty emphasied that He did not support the Illegal gathering in the first place.
That does not mean His Majesty will not consider the Petition.
Lets see whether the King will send out another statement to counter the “spin” from Bernama.
So, TIE A YELLOW RIBBON..
Well, people that does not mean we have to stop Struggling and Pressing for Reform.
The difference now is WE DEPEND ON OURSELVES, just like before.
