Immediate thoughts
The winning margin is better than Wan Azizah’s 13,388 on March 8 despite the concentrated firepower on the ruling party’s side. (Usually BN does better in by-elections for obvious reasons)
The total voter turnout was 81.1 percent, or 47,410 out of 58,459 registered voters -HIGHER than March 8 despite working day (many factories continued operating despite the public holiday). People really wanted their voices to be heard.
Despite it being very racially slanted- the electorate – Malays, Chinese & Indians – all voted for change. Is this the end of racial politics in Malaysia??
The electorate said to hell with the sodomy allegation; we want him in Parliament (and also in Putrajaya!)
The way the results went, we will have a new PM by year end latest (not 1.5 years time) – the only question is who.
By the way, the hottest news in South East Asia at this point in time is not this by-election. It appears that the people of Thailand have stormed government offices.
And of yes, after so many years we finally have a reason to celebrate this Merdeka.
HAPPY MERDEKA
